Making the Fire Engine:

Step 1: Paint your cardboard boxes with Stiletto

Paint cardboard strips with Stiletto

You’ll need three large cardboard boxes for this DIY Halloween costume. Disassemble two of the boxes and cut the cardboard into large pieces that cover each side of your wagon. For the third box, cut windows on all sides except the top and bottom. Don’t toss out the scrap cardboard, you’ll need it for later!

Place your cut cardboard on a drop cloth in a well-ventilated area to protect from overspray. Shake the can of Stiletto spray paint well and apply to one side of the cardboard in smooth, even strokes. Allow the paint to dry to the touch before applying additional coats as desired.

Step 2: Paint cardboard strips with Little Black Dress

Cut the scrap cardboard into thin strips, then place the cardboard strips onto the drop cloth. Shake the can of Little Black Dress spray paint well and apply to one side of the cardboard in smooth, even strokes. Allow the paint to dry to the touch before applying additional coats as desired.

Step 3: Assemble the cardboard fire engine

Once the paint has dried completely, you can begin assembling the main attraction of your DIY Halloween costume: a cardboard fire engine wagon! Use scissors or a box cutter to cut small holes at the top of the cardboard, then use zip ties to secure the cardboard to the outside of the wagon.

Step 4: Use Tacky Glue to add details to the cardboard fire engine

Use Tacky Glue to add details to the cardboard fire engine

Complete your cardboard fire engine by adding simple details! Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue is great for adhering these extra details. Glue the painted black strips along the bottom. Cut 4 circles from yellow construction paper and glue onto the fire engine for headlights and taillights. Cut a ladder shape from white construction paper and glue to the side of the fire engine. Glue two red plastic cups to the top for the sirens. For an extra finishing touch, use paint markers to write or draw on more details! Allow the glue to dry completely.

Making the costumes:

Step 5: Create Dalmatian costume

Apply Puff Paint to create Dalmatian costume

While the glue is drying, work on your family Halloween costumes! To make the dalmatian costume, Lynn Lilly is modifying a simple white onesie. Insert cardboard between layers of fabric, then use black Puff Paint to paint on the spots. This creates a DIY Halloween costume with fun, dimensional texture!

Step 6: Create the firefighter costume

To create the firefighter shirt, insert cardboard between layers of fabric. Apply Aleene’s Insta-Fuse Fabric Fusion to the back side of some yellow and silver fabric, then place it onto your shirt to create stripes. Use an iron to set the heat-activated adhesive. For an extra fun touch, add a Puff Paint fire department badge decorated to your DIY Halloween costume! Set your family Halloween costumes aside and allow the paint to dry completely.

Step 7: Enjoy your family Halloween costume!
