Step 1: Prepare the apples for painting

Prepare apples for painting

Before you start this poison apple décor project, use sandpaper to lightly buff the surface of the faux apples. Ensure the apples are clean, dry, and free of dust or debris. Pierce a wooden skewer through the bottom of each apple, then place upright on your protective surface cover. Remember to work in a well-ventilated area when using spray paint. Select which COLORSHOT Premium Spray Paint shade you want your apples— for this project, Jenna Gibbs is using Blackout for a spooky matte black finish.

Step 2: Paint the apples with Blackout

Be sure to shake the can for at least 1 minute before painting! Apply spray paint to the apples in smooth, even strokes, ensuring all areas of the apple are painted. Allow the paint to dry to the touch before applying additional coats as desired. Once you are satisfied with the coverage, allow the spray paint to cure completely.

Step 3: Flatten clay with rolling pin

Once the paint has dried completely, you can begin creating the “poison” on your apples! Form some air dry clay into a ball, then press onto wax or parchment paper. Use a rolling pin to flatten the clay to about ¼ inch thickness. Use a clay tool to carve out a dripping shape, then remove excess clay.

Step 4: Mold the clay onto apple

Remove the apple’s stem if desired. Drape the clay over the top of your faux apple and gently mold the clay onto the apple. Use a small amount of water as needed to soften the clay and mend any cracks.

Step 5: Carve eyes and nose onto clay

Use your clay sculpting tools to carve eyes and a nose shape onto the clay, revealing the black painted apple underneath. You can also use your sculpting tools to refine the dripping edge for a cleaner look. Once you’re satisfied with how your faux poison apple looks, use damp paper towel or cotton swab to clean excess clay from the painted apple. Allow the air clay to dry completely.

Step 6: Display your poison apples!
