Every child wants a cool bed to sleep in. With this fun DIY headboard idea, you can turn their bedroom into a cabin getaway while freeing up some space and not spending a fortune. All you’ll need is a few thin wood pieces, COLORSHOT Premium Spray Paint and some simple tools for your kids to be sleeping with a new roof over their heads. Like, right over their heads!
- Three 1”x 1” x random length unfinished wood sticks
- Jigsaw or other power saw
- Measuring tape
- 1 ½ in. finish nails
For this DIY headboard idea, you’ll need to start by sketching out your house. Begin with your base lines. Draw the sides of your house with pencil, starting at your baseboards. Customize the height and width of your project to your preference.
Now find the top of your house and draw your roof. From the top of your base lines, measure half the length and make a mark. Now from that point, measure the same distance up and make another mark. This will be the top of your roof. (You can now erase your bottom mark.)
Take a yardstick or one of your wooden sticks to help you draw a straight line from the top of your roof to each baseline.
Your chimney’s height and width are once again your preference. Draw it out with straight lines making sure the top and sides are level. Erase the part of the roof that is going through the chimney.
First, measure the width of your wood. If it is not 1 in thick, make a note as we’ll be using this width for our measurements. (For the sake of instructions, we will be using 1 inch). On your left stick, measure the length of your left base line and make a line. Now measure 1 inch down and make another line. Diagonally connect these 2 lines, top left to bottom right, to create your cut line. Use your jigsaw to cut the diagonal and set aside.
Now repeat these steps for the right base stick, but make your diagonal connect the top right corner to the bottom left corner.
Repeat these steps for the 2 roof pieces, keeping the bottom square but measuring and cutting the diagonals for the tip of the roof.
The chimney is a little tricky, but you can follow the same process and reference these images to make the correct diagonal cuts.
Now you’ll want to cut the chimney part out of your right roof stick. Assemble your right stick and your roof pieces lying flat on the ground in front of you. Draw vertical lines where the INSIDE of your chimney intersects your roof stick. Cut your line marks and remove the inside of your chimney.
In a well-ventilated area, use your favorite COLORSHOT Premium Spray Paint to paint each stick. Apply several light coats to cover all sides and corners until your desired coverage is reached, letting dry between coats.
It’s finally time to assemble your DIY headboard! Use nails at both ends of each stick and hammer them into the wall. Having another set of hands to hold up the pieces is definitely helpful! Make sure the insides of your sticks are lined up with your sketched lines.
Have some fun and use your creativity to create clouds for your DIY headboard. Play with some different shapes and sizes—COLORSHOT Premium Acrylic Paints are perfect for this! You can even change up the colors, starting with blue paints on the bottom clouds and gradually moving up to green clouds. It’s all up to you!
